The following correspondence to the Pranger family is another missive from neighbor Gerhard Burns. Unbeknownst to Gerhard, Private Art is also in a hospital recuperating from yellow jaundice.

Hello Folks:

Received your letter today and was glad to hear from you. I am feeling fine and hope the same to you. I am in the hospital now, and I don't like it a bit. I have some kind of skin rash and I guess in a couple days I will be back with my company. Texas is ok but I like Kentucky better.

I see from your letter that Ralph is fine and I hope he stays that way. You say you haven't heard from Art for five weeks. Mom wrote me a letter about two weeks ago and she said she got a letter from Art.

The Infantry is alright and the training is swell. We just started our sixth week and we have nine more weeks to go. I had Arts address but I lost it some where and I can't keep it in my head.

The weather is different every day. One day you freeze to death and the next day it is as hot as you know what. Well that's about all for now. I will close. Tell everybody I said hello.

Your friend,
Gerhard
