My WWII hero was Robert A. Bessler my father. I was born on June 20th 1943 and my dad spent the first 3 years of my life fighting for my country. He was Army in the 83 Division. I have all of his letters to home.

I was deeply touched and impressed by your gentle, loving tribute to Pvt. Art. The production values of your website created the illusion that you were letting me sift through a treasure trove in your attic. Well done. I have started an internet project on the contributions of the men in my family, beginning with my uncle, Pilot Officer Ronald Mang, who was shot down in the early days of Operation Husky over Messina [ http://www.cam.org/~plmang ]. Letters and artifacts are surfacing as I put the word out, but I regret I waited to so long to begin. Thanks again for this important work.

I need to know when Private Art Pranger was born, where he was born, type of childhood he had, type of education he had, jobs he had, what major battles he was in (besides WW2), Medals of Honar (if any), and what he did after the war. WOW!! It took me a little over 11 hours, but I just finished reading the letters to and from PVT Art. I read every one of them. It makes me glad that my mother saved all of the letters that I sent to her while I was in the Army. I just wish that I saved my letters! I am 33 years old, and I have always had a special place in my heart for your generation. The sacrifice that was made by all of you will never be forgotten. I, for one, will always be thankful that I am given the opportunity to pursue my own goals and live in the land that I do. If it wasn't for the courage and commitment of the men and women of your generation, this would not be possible. I thank you PFC Art, and Rose, for sharing something special with your fellow Americans.

A Note From Rose
For more information on Audie Murphy, check out the extensive Audie Murphy Memorial Web Site. Audie Murphy was the most decorated American combat soldier of World War II, and later went on to become a Hollywood actor.

Hey we are 2 students working on a childrens book about Omaha Beach. Your website is a great place to learn more first hand about WWII from the people who experienced. It is also very touching... bTw our book is titled "The Last Letter."

I am a young American of only 26 years and have never seen the world at war. I do not know what it must have been like to stay awake at night and wonder if my father or older brothers were still alive. If they would be returning home soon, or if I would ever see them again. More importantly, I do not know what it must have been like to have been drafted and torn from everything I knew and the security I have unfortunately taken for granted from time to time. In fact, I never truly realized what the veterans of the World Wars were to mean to me, until I joined the military myself. I became interested in what really happened during those dark years and the effects it must have had on the soldiers who lived through them. It soon became apparent to me that I could very well find myself in the same situation one day, especially now that I had enlisted in the Army. Having been born with a vivid imagination, it was not a difficult task to begin to feel, what must certainly only be a small representation of what it was like. This, however, was quite enough to wake me up. Now, I find that I can not pass a memorial for these wars without stopping, if only for a moment, to say thank you under my breath. So many Americans have either forgotten, or were never taught to appreciate their sacrifice. I can only imagine how frustrating that must be for veterans and their families. Well, I am only one person, one American, but for what it's worth....At times I may take my freedom for granted, but I will never forget, or cease to be grateful for what thfor what you gave much less did.
For my brother Danny Joe Keith...21E...

I was twelve years old when the war ended. I still have keen memories of the soldiers and sailors boarding the troop trains in Charlotte, NC to go overseas to fight for our country. I also remember the trains coming through town loaded with German prisoners headed for whereever they were being held. I also recall the P 40 fighter planes flying over that were based at Morris Field. To this day I can still tell the sound of a P 51 before I see it.

My family has gathered for my birhtday and we have spent an enjoyable evening looking over the site. My father, Darrell Honeycutt, has contributed photos and memories which you have added to the site, thanks. This is the first time he has had a chance to spend much time looking over the site and it brought back even more memories. I hope he will soon put them to paper. At one point in his memories you put in the site he mentions Lt. Matthews. He is pretty sure the story Matthews told after a short convalecence in Endgland was that the Xray people had mistaken his pocket knife as a large piece of shrapnel imbedded in his body. Hello, We are Elske (15 years old) and Evelien (16 years old) and we are two girls from Dordrecht, the Netherlands. We are doing a research for a schoolassignment about the Liberation in 1945. We have to research the World War II and liberation experiences of civilians and soldiers during the period 1944-1945. We have to interview veterans and survivors. The aim of the project is to assemble an oral history of American and other Allied participation in the liberation of the Netherlands during World War II, as well as the courage and endurance of the Dutch people. If you are a World War II veteran or survivor or if you know a World War II veteran or survivor or if you have got any information that might be useful for the assignment, please let us know by sending us a letter or an e-mail. Also, if you are the editor of a newsletter or if you know a newsletter and if you think we could publish a little ad about our assignment, please let us know as well. Thank you so much. I found your site when I did a search on the Stothfang name. Wow you sure have put in a lot of time and it makes for some interesting reading. I sure would like to know what Jinny and my father argued about in the letter from October 1, 1943. My father was married to Madge Stothfang (Niebling) who also worked at Krogers, but she may have quit before this time period. I was born in 1944 and I know she didn't work there after that. They were married in 1937 and they met at Kroger. My aunt Lucille Roselli (Niebling) is mentioned in a November 24, 1943 letter. She lives near Detroit. My father (Elmer) passed away in January of 1967 and my mother in October of 1994. I remember hearing my father mention a few of the other Kroger names in some of the other letters. Thanks for the interesting reading. Bob Stothfang

It might make things a little easier for people if when they put the mouse on an icon(ie: THE CANTEEN) but didn't click on it, that there would be a summary of what was to be expected on that page. I'm 21 years old and have always been facinated by WWII, but more facinated by the men like my grandfather (Rolland Roy- 82nd division 110th infantry) who served so selflessly. I went with he and my grandmother to his 110th reunion in September and I've never before met so many wonderful, interesting, and brave men like those I met that weekend. I can only say thank you to all of the men who served in such a war, for you truely are the Greatest Generation. And though I plan to study WWII as my focus in graduate school, nothing I ever learn will be as comparable as what those men learned and experienced themselves. Again, thank you for putting me and my generation ahead of your own and securing a safe future for us. You all are amazing heros to me.

I am 31 years old and have studied a great deal over the last year. I am convinced that my generation has absolutely no clue of the tremendous price that has been paid to give us the world as we know it today. I am profoundly grateful to those that willingly or unwillingly paid for me and my children. Thank you. Terry

Was too young for WWII, 14 when war ended. Enlisted in USAF in 1948 during Berlin Air Lift. Commissioned in 1954 in USAF and received pilot wings in late 1955. Spent next 32 years flying, staff duty, and commanding--retired in Oct 86 (0-8) and now miss flying and camaraderie of Air Force. My heroes are the men and women who served and fought during WWII. There are 2 elderly gentlemen in my church who entered Europe on D-Day and fought into Germany until VE-Day. Two local heroes. I have enjoyed reading your home page and its interesting info. I was too young for WWII, but my 3 older brothers served: 1 in Merchant Marines, 2 in regular Navy. One brother, Adrian Chipley, piloted the Admiral's barge at the signing of the unconditional surrender of the Japanese. He has described the awesome sight of thousands of planes flying over the ship during the signing. May God bless all those who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and other "conflicts".

Hello Rose, Got your E-mail. It's been awhile since I last visited your site. It's like visiting an old friend. I was wondering if everyone was aware of the National W.W.II Memorial on the Mall in DC? We can all help to commemorate the brave men and women who served in World War Two by contacting the American Battle Monuments Commission at P.O. Box 96766 Washington, D.C. 20090-6766. Or call 1-800-639-4WW2 or you can visit their website at http://www.wwiimemorial.com A bit of information that I thought would be appreciated here. Hope all is well with you and Happy Anniversary. 45 years is quite an accomplishment. Sincerely, Allison Gerring Astoria, Or.

I heard about your site from Scott of Technical Resource Systems. My father (Bernard Muncy) was a "Devil in Baggy Pants," 82nd Airborne. He was flown home after the war with honors because of his longevity of service. He quite often told stories of the war and his most avid listener was his granddaughter (Nikki). Dad died on October 26, 1996, and Nikki was the most frequent visitor to his grave site. Once she took toy solders over and put them all around the grave site. She is now buried at his feet where she often liked to be. She died in a car crash Nov 2, 1999, just three days after she turned 17 (October 30). She would have been so excited about your site as she kept up with all types of stores from WWII.

A Note From Rose
Rose Dear Dottie,

Mere words can not describe how moved I was by the account of your Dad and the subsequent tragedy of his granddaughter. I printed it out for Private Art and there was no way I could read it aloud. I just handed it to him.

It only points out that the great war was not a fictional story like the epic movies of men marching on the beach on a wide screen, surrounded by thundering guns, with graphic bloody scenes around them, in stereophonic sound, with a background of high decibel sound track music. These portrayals are nice but not nearly as accurate as the experiences of our visitors.

I wish every one who even has scant knowledge of the impact and scope of WWII could read stories like these. These stories are from real people who have, or their relatives have, a genuine and personal contact with their families' role in the great war. These warriors are the heroes of the most fearsome war in all world history.

Their efforts should never be forgotten.

I was an instrutor at the parachute school in1942 & 1943.I was then transfered to the 513 pir co I.Then injured and sent to the MPs I hope I will hear from you Happy holidays,Murray

Hi Rose and Art; Happy 45th. It was 1982 onboard USS Ranger Cv-61, the night before Thanksgiving. All the cooks in the Officers Mess were preparing the FEAST. I was the Flag Adm. bodyguard at the time. I calls me to his at sea cabin at 0230. The Adm. said that he just could'nt wait for the afternoon Feast. I ask him what he wanted me to do? He simply said "find me a turkey dinner". I went down to the Mess and told the Chief about the Adm. request. At first he just laughed, than he told me to hold on. About 30 min.s later the Mess Chief returned to the Mess with a HUNGERY MAN TURKEY DINNER. I was suprised. The Chief placed the meal on Navy dishes and I ran the Feast up the Adm. cabin. He was so pleased at what I was able to do, that we pulled into port the next day. Singapore.

I am a Native of Duluth, Minnesota and I had five Great Uncles that all served and saw combat in the war. I had three Great Aunts that served in the WACs. though two of my Great Uncles were prisoners of war, all five returned safe and sound. My Great Uncle Ray fought in five major campaigns, his baby brother Dick, who was 17 when he went to the ETO, told me a funny story when I was a little boy. It seems Uncle Dick, who was in the infantry and carried the BAR, was annoyed by the hold up of a column he was in as they were walking across France(I think) he walked up to the front of the column where he saw a fellow standing in a jeep looking across a river with binoculars. Being 17,impatient and anxious to get to wherever they were going he yelled at the fellow in the jeep"Hey! Why don't you get the hell out of the way so we can get going!" Much to my Uncle's surprise(and horror!) the fellow in the jeep...Gen. George S.Patton turned around, and, upon seeing this baby-faced 17 year old with the baby face, the General smiled, saluted my Uncle and barked "Yes Sir!"

Well, it's been a while since i've been by and i can't wait to see the new photos... I am not a WW2 vet but i am a Desert Storm vet and a former Chemical Operation NCO in the Army... I know enough about war and i've seen plenty of WW2 era style films to realize that I'll never fully understand what it was like without actually being there... i know it is silly, but sometimes i wish i was there... and i know WW2 veterans would tell me, "no, you don't want to be there!" just to server under great leaders like Gen G. S. Patton ( a great hero and model of mine since i was a child) and to fight along side of great men against an evil and sadistic leader like Hitler... it would have been an honor but i guess i didn't get here fast enough! I am sure Patton would have been proud of our little armored war in Iraq... i am sure he gota kick out of it! From a chemical standpoint, we didn't do any smoke screens, we were kept busy with the threat of biological and chemical agents.. and they were used over there... the press and government just chose not to tell anyone.. Anyway, thanks for the great site!!! and thanks for being there..

I first found your site last year about this time and have shared it with students and family and friends. As a mother of a nineteen year old son, I have really appreciated reading the care and concern that mother Pranger showed for young Art to stay out of trouble and not forget his raising. My older children and I have enjoyed your website as it brings a new perspective to life during that time. My father was and Army medic, mostly at Ft. Lewis, WA and my mother was living in Louisiana. The both tell of their experiences to include seeing the maneuvers with Patton and Ike in Louisiana. I went into the Army and served with the 8th Infantry (Mechanized) in Germany, the Army Ranger Training Command at Camp Rudder on Eglin AFB, Florida, and with the 327th Infantry (Airborne) and the 17th Infantry (Light). I appreciate all that your generation did and I pray that these experiences may find their way to our elected leader's hearts that they would ensure my children and future generations will not have to endure what you did. Actually, I think it should be standard protocol that the President, his advisors, and the Joint Chiefs should see the movie "Saving Private Ryan" before they commit troops to harms way. Thank you again for preservin this part of history. May God Bless you richly in all that you do.
