I always had a personal hero in my life-actually two to be exact. My uncle Bill who fought with the 36th and my uncle Claude who fought and was taken captive by the Japenese. He was a very kind and loving person for as far back as I can remember even after suffering through the Batan death march and torture and cruelties at the hands of the Japenese. As a child I never knew what he had been through because he would never talk about it. The things I found out came from my grandmother (his sister) The only thing that I knew for sure was his hate for war and the Japenese in World War Two. He passed away this past year and after his passing I was lucky enough to get a copy of a journal by a man who was taken prisoner with him. It gives great insite into what these soldiers went through. It's very hard for me to imagine the hardships that they suffered and in my eyes they will all be heroes. God bless them and their beliefes and my they rest in peace. Sincerely John C. Ballard

Donald R. Bare was an honorable man, he was a proud Army veteran of World War II. He landed on Utah Beach in the Normandy Invasion and served in several other European Campaigns. He rescued the author Ernest Hemingway, who was a WWII reporter, when his Jeep was blown up by a land mine on a road in France. He was a wonderful grandfather. He passed away April 2000 and I just wanted to honor him for the great person he was. Love, his grand-daughter, Joni Kervin. (Thank You)

My father, John D. Poppell,Jr. was captured at the Battle of the Bulge and was a POW at Bad Orb, Germany from Dec.1944-April 1945. He was 23 yrs old and the father of Ronnie age 4 and Diane age 2-1/2 He was written up and interview in the New Orleans paper with pictures of him, my brother & me. I have a V-mail letter he wrote to my grandmother the week after he was liberated. It,along with the newspaper articles and picture is a priceless treasure to me. Thanks for what you do to keep the memories alive and let the people of this country know what a sacrifice these men made in this war and all wars for our freedom we take so much for granted. My grandfather, Jack Thompson, was a friend of Ernie's and a correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. He is quoted in the June 10, 1944 column called "Invasion" that is on your website. Just thought that would be interesting to you. If you follow this link, it will tell you more about him: http://www.adena.com/ehs/thompson.htm Also, there is an exhibit about him at the First Division Museum. If you go to their website www.rrmtf.org/firstdivision/ you can see take a tour of their exhibits. My grandpa is included in this tour. All of his writings and memorabilia are housed in the Museum's research center. The Colonel McCormick Research Center is a valuable tool for any WWII historian.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Pranger, I'm a member of the first generation that benefited from the sacrifices of your generation-- the "Boomers". My parents shared some of your experiences. I've sent your site to my Mother. I'm sure she'll enjoy it, as I have. I'm sure you've seen the "Kilroy" site. She loves that one. My Father was an Italian national, who was drafted in 1943, and spent the war stateside. His brother joined the Northern Italian artisans, and was killed fighting the Germans in Northern Italy. I also sent the site to my aunt and another uncle, Ted Fuller. He flew on bomber crews from 1942 to '45, mostly on missions over Italy. Thank you for a wonderful site to visit, and to share a bit of what that era meant to my parents. VJP Lakeland, Fla.

I have been visiting your site since February 1999. I was a rifleman in the 84th Infantry Division in the European theatre in WW II. Your site inspired me to enter my letters home, which my mother had saved and my wife organized, into my computer hard drive along with some scanned photographs and some grahics from the web so that I could print them and put them into binders for my kids and grandkids. Now however like rgefvert of Edina, MN, I normally use EI5 for Mac (OS 8.6), but have to use Netscape 4.72 to see your site. If you gave him any info about this, I would appreciate receiving it too.

I don't believe much in coincidence. I found your website as a favorite pick from hyperclick while doing research on search engines. After seeing the movie The Patriot last week I was wondering about all the unsent letters that soldiers gave their buddies to mail to their families in the event they died in battle. What has happened to those letters when they came out alive? Faced with death, those letters might have contained strong decairations of love. What a shame for them never to have been sent. Some may have contained embaressing confessions and I'm not intrested in humiliating anyone. But love expressed in a letter when there may be no tommorrow is a powerful thing. I had considered compiling a book of letters like this but it is just a thought. If there is already such a book you know of I would appreciate a title so I could check it out from the library. If not, what do you know on this subject? Sincerely, Lisa Cooper

I happened across your site while researching the WWII home front for my internship project this summer. It is not only incredibly informative and helpful, it is beautiful, well-designed and well-oreganized. (Having grown up with a graphic designer for a mom, that's something I always notice.) I have heard numerous war-era stories from my grandparents, all of whom either served or lived through the war. It is not only impressive to me that such a short time ago we were all involved in such a life-changing event, but that there are people out there willing and interested in passing along their stories and information for people that never experienced it first-hand (including myself). Thank you for being one such example of that generosity. Your site has helped me in pulling together my internship project and has also impressed upon me, once again, just how far-reaching WWII was and how important is the free dispersal of WWII histories and memories. Thank you much!

On a recent temporary duty assignment I had the unique opportunity to observe Memorial Day at the Luxembourg American Cemetery. The grounds were pristine and I had the privilege to pay tribute to our fallen heroes. General Patton's resting place is positioned at the top of the rising grounds, still watching over his men. The remaining 39% of graves, (5,076), of fallen soldiers and airmen remain. The other heroes were periodically returned home upon the request of their loved ones and families. A red rose and flags, (US & Luxembourg), were placed at every marker. From my observation, just about every State of the U.S. was represented in the price these fine men paid for our freedom and democracy. One of the monuments erected has inscribed, " HERE ARE RECORDED THE NAMES OF AMERICANS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY AND WHO SLEEP IN UNKNOWN GRAVES." "United States Army and Army Air Forces." It was very nice in Luxembourg that day, in regard to the weather, blue skies and sunshine, but I felt that I had a greater and more precious advantage. A gift that most people don't even attempt to acknowledge, or they just take for granted. I am an American. I salute all of our nation's veterans, their valorous efforts and the noble support of friends, families and fellow citizens, God bless!

It's really interesting to see so much on WWII. My Grandfather was a POW in the Battle of the Buldge. I know very little about his experiences duing the war. I didn't even know when he was captured until a few years ago when he ws talking with my huband's granparents. He never talked about it to any of us grandkids. My dad said he recieved metals from the war(a purple heart for being wounded along with more) but he wasn't interested with keeping them. He would let my dad and his brother play with them like cars in the dirt, so they were ruined and thrown out. I have never heard of anyone else from WWII being so turned off by the idea of talking about their experiences from WWII. Everyone else I've met that had anything to do with WWII likes to talk about it freely. I guess I just don't understand why he can't even share this with his own children. I don't have any idea how horrible a war could be, but after more than 50 years I thought he would like to talk about it and he doesn't. I feel like I have the oportunity to hear first hand experiences from what he lived and not from what the government wants us to know form history books.I am glad for the websites out here they are great, but I wish my grandfather would talk to me. If you have any comments or stories you would like to share please E-mail me. thanks, Mary

As the number of Private Art’s Guestbook entries climbs to a total of 700, we want to express our gratitude to all of you who take the time and trouble to write us. I often go back to read these wonderful remarks about the old warriors of World War II. I send a reply to all of them. The only downside would be if the writer does not include an e-mail address or does not complete one. I hope these folks see this and write again. As the highlights of Memorial Day fade away, there are two WWII related events which we bring to your attention: The Grand Opening of the D-Day Museum June 6,2000, in New Orleans and the continuing project, the World War II Memorial in Washington DC. Both of these projects are so timely and worth adding to your Bookmarks and/or Favorites lists. The National D-Day Museum http://ddaymuseum.org/ National World War II Memorial http://www.wwiimemorial.com We will continue to encourage people to get actively involved in both these wonderful projects. In all humility but with great pride, we feel like we are a large contributor in the ongoing march to keep and honor our veterans’ histories, as these valiant fighters' numbers, sadly, are dwindling as we write. And kids - Your Dad thanks you for your loving tributes to him around the recent Memorial Day observance. Gratefully, Art and Rose Pranger Private Art http://www.private-art.com

I stumbled upon your site while viewing the new museum in New Oleans. I was born during the war and had many uncles who served. My mom and dad kept every letter and picture they sent in a trunk along with ration books and newspaper clippings of the war effort. We kids spent hours going through the trunk over and over, year after year. Both of them are gone now, but my brother has organized the treasures in scrapbooks that are still highlites of family reunions. Thanks for the memories!

Of utmost importance is that I thank all of you who gave more than can be asked of a person, yet fulfilled your tasks so admirably; the responsibility of man. I presently reside in Prague, and recently visited Plzen(Pilsen) for the liberation ceremonies held there on 6 May. To say i was moved would be an unforrgiveable understatement. I was dutifully shaken enough to decide to undertake a historical writing of the subject. While there, I was privelleged to meet several members of the 3rd army. I am hoping with this post to illicit information from any other 3rd army soldiers who made it to Plzen. And gods grace to those who did not. Thank you all.

My Father's Father was a veteran of both World Wars. I was never able to meet him, as he died soon after he baptised me (he was an Army Chaplain) with water he collected from the River Jordan. I have found a letter that my Father had forgotten existed. Grandfather was writing to his two sons back in Iowa from Italy. He felt they might not make it back to the states. I am in the process of moving but would love to share the letter with you. I have many pictures as well. Also, if anyone served with Captain Chaplain Robert Chapler in World War 2, please email me.

A lot of younger people in this country think that Memorial Day means a day off from school or work. The real meaning is to honor men like you that left small and large towns to go to completely unknown places to fight and defend the United States and what it stands for. Some did not return. Thanks Dad!

As we approach this Memorial Day weekend, I was reminded that I have never signed the Guestbook. As one of Private Art's daughters, I often visit this site. Growing up, I thought I had heard every "war story" my dad had to tell. However, since the inception of this site I have realized there are so many more. Reading the Guestbook entries from other veterans has been most enlightening. To read about first-hand experiences is more interesting than any textbook. I would agree with the teacher who suggested that this site be required reading for all high school students. As an adult, I have come to truly appreciate the fact that I have never lived through a World War, and hope I never do. But, should this country ever experience another World War, I hope our troops are just as tough and brave as were all the folks who served in WWII. Thanks dad, and to all the folks who served in WWII. Without your heroism, this country sure would be a whole lot different.

Rose, thank you for your reply. After I had sent you the message, I was wondering if you have time to read all of them. Well, now I know you do. As for where I found your site, it was while browsing through Yahoo, WW2, Personal Accounts. There is quite a list of people's personal accounts of the war and the Private Art caught my attention. I'm the one who signed up to reenact and I went to a flea market this past Sunday and picked up a foot locker, blanket, haversack, shovel/case, dog tag chains, and a shaving kit pouch. I also talked to someone that has an M1 rifle to sell and I'll be calling him in the next week. I can't wait for the WW2 Commemorative Weekend this year. On Friday, there'll be a convoy through Reading, PA and will be as if we just liberated the city. There are supposed to be over 100 vehicles. Special guests are Col. Robert Morgan (Memphis Belle Pilot), members of the Tuskegee Airmen, Maj. "Dutch" Van Kirk (navigator on the Enola Gay), and many others. Check out their web site at: www.maam.org/maamwwii.html.

I am only 17 yrs old, but my parents were survivors of the war and have lived through it from the beginning and also saw the so called ending of this war. My parents are originally from Cambodia but they were forced to fled their homeland over the mountains, jungles, cross the rivers, seen deaths in their faces and even lost a few children of their own on their way to the border of Thailand. My purpose of writing this message is to thank you, the American soldiers for giving up your lives, even if you didn't want to, but to come to a strange land as a young man or as an old man, to give up your lives to come fight for someone else's freedom. That really means a lot to my family and I. My family are currently living in Mitchell, SD right now and we are happily living our fortunate lives just like everyone else, thanks to men like you. My sister is 26 yrs old and she too lived through this nightmare, and she remembered alot about her experiences as a child living in hell. Thanks again for doing what you did. This might not make sense what I just wrote, but that's because i'm writing from school and I'm not suppose to be on the net anyways; so I figure I should just write something down quickly anyways. bye. sokha

I've been interested in the history of WW2 since I was a young boy. Much of it had to do with my mother and the movies and shows of those times (born in '55). As I get older, I'm more interested in what the individual soldier/sailor went through on a more personal basis. I recently joined a reenactment group, the 1st Inf. Div., and my first reenactment will be on the 10th WW2 Weekend in Reading, PA. I highly recommend those of you in the area to attend this event. I've been to them in the past, but not as a reenactor. It's a real treat to see and hear the stories from the WW2 veterans who visit the show. It's interesting trying to find the proper uniforms and field equipment that the American forces used. It's a great history lesson, especially when you're wearing clothes that soldiers wore back in the war years. All I need is a M1 Garand rifle. Whenever I put on the old uniform and gear, I feel a sense of pride. I'm not doing this to glorify war, but to pay due respect to these veterans and the people from this generation who gave so much. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be here. Your site is beautiful and very much alive in the sense that you always are adding something new and the links that brach off makes it one of the most interesting sites. Thank you!

To whom it may concern: I am researching a book entitled World War II Letters by Walter Cronkite, which is a collection of letters from soldiers to their friends and families back home aimed at capturing the war as seen through the eyes of its participants around the world. World War II Letters will have letters from soldiers from every country involved in the Second World War, including the United States, England, France, Japan, Germany, Russia, Canada, Australia, and other countries. The book will be published by Knopf. But we need your letters! Do you have a letter to share from your father, husband, brother, sister, wife, mother, or friend that you want to share? If so, we would love to hear from you. Please contact me at the following address: Ms. Tracy Quinn Adler & Robin Books, Inc. 3000 Connecticut Avenue, NW Washington, DC 2008 202-986-9275 Fax: 202-986-9485 tquinn@adlerbooks.com www.adlerbooks.com/wwiiletters.html If you are the webmaster of a veterans’ site or if you distribute a newsletter, please post this information. I am a web designer and this is one of the most beautiful and well consturcted sites I have ever seen. I have authored over a hundred sites and viewed at what seems countless thousands, so I know what I'm talking about. It seems that Private Art is developing a following among web designers. One of my associates referred me to your site as 'something to see'. I'm glad I visited. I could go on and on about ease of navigation, color choice, etc. and you have heard all of this before, but I must repeat myself, and say you have a beautiful site. I teach web design and programming at one of the local colleges in southern New York and will refer my studnets to Private Art as an example of 'this is how you do it'! So please bear with me as I ask 2 professional questions. 1) Who did this masterpiece? and 2) Which programs (Photo Shop, Front Page, etc.) were used. I just know I'm going to be asked these questions by 'the kids' as I like to call my students and I should have some answers. Best regards, Sal

Outstanding site. I have been acutely interested in America's involvment in WWII for as long as I can remember. I have not had the opportunity to speak with my Grandfather, who served in the US Army, or my Uncle who was a guerrilla in the Philippines during the war, as they had both passed on before I was born.
