A beautiful site! What a treasure trove of memories! My dad, Morty Spitz, served with the 143rd AAA Gun Bn. in the ETO from 8/44-5/46. His unit participated in four major campaigns, Northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. Dad was a very quiet, modest man who never spoke about his war years, other then small, anecdotal stories. He died of a heart attack in 1965 when I was 13 years old. He had just turned 48. My mother, being a young "impetuous" 20 year old threw boxes and boxes of his letters in the furnace when she got his telegram informing her that he was finally coming home after 2 years. "No more letters, no more letters...!" For a number of years I have been researching his unit's history and have even located and been in contact with some of his comrades, including his two best friends. What an enriching experience this has been for me and my family! Wishing you both the best! Sincerely, Dave

On 31 March 2001 I attended the "book debut: Beyond Valor", which was at the Barnes and Noble Store in Springfield, Va.. It was a pleasure, "I must say", to see what was probably the last "BRONZE STAR MEDAL" issued to a D-Day veteran. The book is about Rangers and Airborne soldiers. Francis Lamoureux was a pathfinder with the 508th Parachute Regiment. He "for some unknown reason" was overlooked, and never got his "Medal", that all the other 176 pathfinders were issued. When at the book debut, "he finally got his "long-overdue medal". And to top it off, "It was pinned on by none other then his D-Day commander, "Colonel Louis Mendez" also in the book! You can view the pick of Lamoureux on my website: www.ww2dday.com "which was posted today. Thanks again Rose, Your site is wonderful. Hope some of you can make it to the D-Day dedication on 6 June 2001 in Bedford, Va.

Wonderful site! I am the Creative Arts Director at a large church here in the Northwest and this summer we are producing an original musical about America in the days leading up to World War II. Your site has helped me in the show's creation and I appreciate the heart evident in every page. I'd love to include a link to this page on our show's website, so people can learn more about the soldiers who fought the war. What would you think about that? Please let me know. (You can visit the early website at www.americaswings.org -- right now it's mostly information on auditions, but soon we'll have more info...) Thanks again for your great site!

I am an Army Captain in command of the 12th Chemical Company, 1st Infantry Division (stationed in Germany). Our unit history traces back to the 1st Gas and Flame Regiment. My grandfather, also named Thamar Main was killed in action late in the War in Germany. He was an Infantry soldier, but I don't know much else. I'd like to find out more so I could visit the site where he died. I'll be stationed in Germany for about another 10 months before rotating back to the U.S. If you have any links that might be helpful to the curious, I'd appreciate them. Thamar Main

A friend of mine put me on to this site. I'm an ex-Combat Marine, a BAR Man in the Pacific Theatre. I had a lot of good friends who fought in the Battle of the Buldge, landed on Normandy and were in many of the different areas where there was heavy fighting. I've learned no one is bullet proof and there have been many valiant and brave individuals who served under fire and extremely difficult and dangerous circumstances. God Bless each one and their families.

I to have a collection of 84 letters written home by my father, Private Ova W. Ratliff. They span an 8 month period from his induction to his wartime death in Hurtgen Forest, Germany. I have written a book, "I Can Hear The Guns Now", about his time in WW II. This story is told from a very personal viewpoint of how WW II affected one man and his family. All of those 84 unedited letters are in the book, just as they were written. He really didn't want to go to war. He was torn between taking care of his family and serving his country, but when the call came he went. Please look at the book's website: WWW.ICANHEARTHEGUNSNOW.COM for more information about him, me, and how to order the book. I am donating $2.00 from the sale of each book to The National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Respectfully your, Thomas G.Ratliff

MY DADDY HIT THE BEACH @ OMAHA D+6 AND WAS ASSIGNED TO CO C OF THE 86TH CHEMICAL MORTOR BAT. HE WAS A 1ST OR 2ND LT AND HIS DUTY WAS AS A FORWARD OBSERVER, SO HE SPENT ALOT OF TIME WITH THE INFANTRY. @ THE HURTGEN FOREST, HE WAS ATTACHED TO THE 109TH IN REG OF THE 28TH IN DIV, AND THATS ABOUT ALL I CAN GET OUT OF HIM. I DO KNOW THAT AFTER THEY FINALLY TOOK THE TOWN OF HURTGEN, THE 121ST IN REG AND ITS ATTACHED UNIT(S) C CO, RECEIVED THE DISTINGUISHED UNIT CITATION. HE WAS THEN ASSIGNED TO 1ST BATTALION, 38TH IN REG, 2ND IN DIV DURING THE BULGE. HE HAD A DRIVER NAMED GEORGE WHITE (JR?) AND HAS TRIED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH HIM BUT HAS NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL. ACCORDING TO THE 86TH'S BATTLE HISTORY, CPL. WHITE WAS FROM WASHINGTON PENNSYLVANIA. DADDY SPENT ALOT OF TIME WITH INFANTRY BUT HE IS VERY INVOLVED AND A MEMBER OF THE 86TH ASSN. HE SPEAKS HIGHLY OF CPL WHITE, AND II WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM HIM OR ANYONE WHO KNEW HIM. I HAVE ONLY TODAY PURCHASED THIS PC AND THIS IS MY 1ST TIME ON THE WEB. Enjoying you site very much and hope to spend more time there reading the letters. Your are to be congratulated for developing and maintaining such a beautiful and interesting place. I recently published a book,"DEAR CAPTAIN, ET AL.—the Agonies and the Ecstasies of War and Memory," about my World War II experience in the combat infantry. It is an authentic re-creation of a rifle company's combat history written over eight years from original source military records, letters, testimonials of colleagues, visits to battlefields and cemeteries, etc. The book covers the last six months of combat in Europe: the breaching of the Siegfried Line, the Battle of the Bulge, and the crossing of the Roer, Rhine, and Weser rivers to meet the Russians on the Elbe on V-E day. Anyone interested may E-mail me for information at: www.allanhowerton@aol.com or go the publisher at: Xlibris.com/DearCaptainetal.html for a description, excerpts, author biography, etc. I would be glad to try and answer any questions about my experiences in World War II whether one wishes to buy the book or not. Sincerely, Allan W. Howerton

Hello, Very nice web site. I am tracing and starting to put build a web site for my father, Sgt. John D. McGinn, who also served in a Chemical Mortar Battalion during WWII (3rd CMB). My father passed away last year and I found about 140 letters that he wrote home to his mom with all sorts of ribbons, badges, medals and memorabilia. It's pretty exciting! It just takes so long to go through everything and put the pieces together! You have done a wonderful job on this web site. Talk to you later! Dear Rose and Art, You have a beautiful site here. I really mean it!! It's so well-designed and thorough. I was raised by grandparents and thus grew up with war-time stories and a sense of conserving things around the house, while still having fun. My grandparents did a great job at relaying what life was like during the war and have instilled qualities I don't think many 23 year olds have these days. Maybe I'm wrong, but I hope I have a better outlook on life because of it. Thanks for such a personal, indepth look into the forties and WWII. Sincerely, Jaclyn

Dear Rose, Your son, Gary, let Greg and I know about your site. This is a wonderful and sentimental site! I will keep it as a bookmark. Since I am trying to design the Cathedral Concert Series site, can you tell me where you obtained this Guestbook? I would love to have this on our site as well. Also, is this site designed with JAVA language only? I am very new to the web design languages, and utilize HTML only at this time, and I was just curious. I will be back to peruse this site at my leisure. Thanks, Karen Schaffer schaffer@one.net or business kschaffer@kdc.com

My father, Charles O. Hardman was a 1st Lt. 30th Division 101 Inf. He married my mother before the war and spent two and a half years over seas. He landed on Omaha Beach and fought in the Battle of the Bulge . I have discovered all of the letters my parents wrote to each other unfolding a private chapter in my parents lives that none of us(children) realized. I want to somehow documents this and perhaps even write a book. Do you have any idea about how to get started?

Rose and Art, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I was at Bedford,Virginia for the initial dedication of the "National D-Day Monument". Over 5,000 folks were there. "However", the main dedication will be on 6 June 2001. This is the town that had the "highest casualties" per capital then any other town in the u.s. on D-Day. Company A-116th Infantry was from Bedford, and that morning, led the first wave. With over 96% casualties within the first 15 minutes of landing, Bedford would have this "unwanted" claim to fame. contact me if you have any interest in attending: http://www.ww2dday.com "I can put you into contact with the folks in Bedford". Private Art - A Third Anniversary We are celebrating our site’s third anniversary this month. Since its inception in December 1997, Private Art continues to be an overwhelming tribute to the old warriors from World War II. Almost weekly, we get news from our visitors of another veteran, both from the 86th Chemical Mortar Batallion or other WWII outfits, who has passed away. We believe we are doing our best to keep their memories alive. We thank all the Guestbook entrants who take time out from their busy lives to drop us a line. We are very proud of this acclaim. It is one thing to be awarded countless reviews by giants in the Internet community but quite another to be recognized by folks from every corner of the globe - And we urge each signer to make sure to enter your accurate e-mail address that I may reply to you. The same is true of posting complete e-mail addresses. I take pride in getting back to you. Rose Pranger Site Historian PRIVATE ART http://www.private-art.com

....Hello folks, I'd like to compliment you on remembering our fighting men in this way.....My war hero is my own son, Steve. He joined the Army and volunteered for Viet Nam duty when all around him many others were scheming to avoid the draft. He came back all right - a little shaken, but a real man for all of that and I am proud of him for not marching in any protest parade or running off to Canada. Right or wrong, his country needed him and he did the right thing. Sincerely yours, Edward Frey, author and inventor, founder of the Frey Scientific Co.

While surfing the net trying to find information in support of a novel I am writing on story that takes place during WWII, I came upon this site. It seemed a perfect time and place to make my own inquirey. My father, Lt. William C. Stewart from Buffalo, New York, was in the Army Air Corps stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1943 and ultimately in Germany where his plane went down in New Ulm in July of 1945. I would love to hear from anyone who may be able to tell me something that may be significant as I was only nine months of age when he died. Hi, tapped into sight for a midterm project and found a little of my own family story. My father that I loved very much was in WWII in the Pacific Theater and I was fortunate that he would share some of his stories and pictures with me. He didn't really like to talk about it all that much but during the anniversary of the Normandie invasion he shared quite a bit with me. Sometime when I'm not studying so hard I'll send you some neat pictures of fly overs of the Missouri when the b-29's cruised by while the signing of the treaty between Japan and the US was going on. Neat sight really enjoyed it alot. Kerri Lynn DeHart daughter of Eldon M. DeHart Staff Sgt. Army Aircorps. (B-29 Radio Man)

Ever since I was a little girl I have had this infatuation with the World Wars. Only being seventeen, I have never lived through one, and I never want to in the future. But, I love collecting, learning and simply trying to understand how it was in the trenches through letters and other icons from soldiers that were actually there. The sad part is, I am a small percentage in my generation. Many are more interested in buying new clothes and finding the latest "stuff". I sometimes wonder if they have ever stopped to actually think about the men who fought to allow them to be able to go out to the store and purchase what they want. If only the world cared more...... If there are any special memorials or artifacts that could be sent to me, it would be greatly appreciated. With Sincere Thanks, Patricia DeSales

Hello, What a wonderful site. My father, Pvt. Miles R.Trimpey landed on Normandy beach with th 2nd Division, 38th Infantry. He was an anti-tank crewman. Wounded in Bleialf, Germany November 24, 1944. Would like to know if anyone may have known him? He always wanted to re-connect with some of his old unit and buddies. Due to his severe injuries, he was discharged and never got to reconnect with his unit and fellow crewmen. He passed away over 10 years ago and now I am trying to do this for him. All the information that I can find, I will put together in a book of his letter's and etc. entitled, "Letter's Between Miles." It is a keepsake of over 300 letters, documents and pictures during his service during the war.

This is a great site. My dad, J.R. Hutcherson was in the Marines in 1945. He would have been in the proposed invasion of Japan, had the Japanese not surrendered when they did. He had several buddies, slightly older, who saw action at Okinawa and other Pacific areas. Also, a good friend of our family, Quint Blevins (US Army) was in the D-Day Invasion at Normandy (second wave) and was wounded during action in the hedge rows a litle later. He recovered, and was in the final push into Germany a few months later. My uncle, H.H. Burchfield (US Army) was in the Phillipines late in the war.

I went to "find it.com," and typed in "all WWII websites."When they gave me a list of WWII websites I saw what said something like: private art-letters from the home front(it was something like that). When I read the name it sounded really interesting and so I clicked on the title and went throughout the whole website and completely loved it.

Hi Rose. Just heard that Al Greutzmacher passed away. He was in Company D and received a battlefield commission. In civilian life, he also succeeded as he became the President of the Chicago Board of Trade. Al organized (and financed) our first reunion in St Louis. We will miss him. Also, Bill McDaniel, Co C, finally received the decorations he was awarded during WWII. I am willing to assist other members of the 86th who also never received their decorations. 86th members only. Just e-mail me with your request. Regards. (s) Lobster Charlie 2, 5, and 6. (in succession) Comment: The veterans of this great battalion should remember those call signs.

Private Art was bookmarked on my pc by my new son-in-law, Dr. Kevin McGowin, who is an english prof. at NCSU,Raleigh.I clicked on the site and have been amazed!Read letters from Aug.'43 (I was 2 mo. old then) thru Dec.'43 (I still have my Christmas '43 no-name-brand teddy bear--"Teddy". My dad, James C. Robertson was in the 8th Army Air Corps and served in Georgia and Florida--as a SSG training troops and was not shipped overseas. The letters and comments brought tears to my eyes. I am a Viet Nam veteran. I was a private in Jan.1967, a 2nd Lieutenant by Dec. 1967 and served in Panama and Viet Nam.I have a number of my and family letters to me and lot of B&W, color pics and slides. I began writing my story for my family more than a year ago but haven't gotten much past an intro..Private Art has really given me some ideas. I applaude Art & my Dad and the millions like them for their WWII service, I applaude Rose and Art and Rebecca for this site. Our family has a few saved items ranging from the Civil War(ambrotype, orders) WWI(my grandad-photos,part address book (black) and New Testament to WWII to Vietnam--Your work should help in urging other vets to preserve and tell their stories. Hi Rose, I wrote to you a few times earlier about joining a reenactment unit. Well, I attended my first event in Reading,PA this past June, and it was one of the most memorable times of my life. I'm still thinking about what a great time I had. The 1st Inf. Div. Reenactment Group has a great bunch of guys. We had a motor pool tent with one member bringing 6 Indian motorcyles. We had an Ordinance Tent, a Quartermaster's Tent, a cavalry set up with 2 horses, and a field kitchen. The horses and field kitchen were the ones that brought the most attention. The kitchen had 2 WWII gas powered ovens that we used for cooking and washing our pots, utensils and canteens. We had spam, chilli, baked apple pies and ate very well. I even attended a Mass held on the hood of a jeep by a local priest! I helped load .30 cal. blank rounds for a machine gun and was involved in 2 skirmishes for the crowds. One of the best experiences was meeting a particular WWII veteran who belonged to the 28th Div. that befriended us. He said that even though we're civilians dressed up, we still reminded him of his old army buddies and he was able to tell us stories that he normally wouldn't tell people. This was the ultimate compliment. I still haven't gotten an M1, but I'm getting one through the Civilian Marksmanship Program. If there are any WWII veterans that are interested, they are giving the WWII vets a $200 discount until Sept. 30th of this year. I'll be getting in touch with you at a later date, until then take care.

Great site! Hello, I'm a web designer for the state of Florida Division of Historical Resources. We are putting together a WWII memorial here and I and another guy are building the accompanying website. My father was also a WWII vet by the way. We are making a comprehensive tribute to the veterans of WWII who are from or have some ties to Florida. The site will also deal with any aspect of Florida's contribution to WWII. We ask veterans and/or their families to contact us if they have any information they would like us to include. We would really appreciate it. You can contact us through this email address: amyers@mail.dos.state.fl.us Thanks

After finishing a book about the Okinawa Invasion I was interested in finding out more about WWII. That is how I stumbled on to your web site. What an delight it is to read all the comments. It was a relief to know others of my age group (boomer) are just as interested as I am in learning more about what our fathers experienced. My dad was with the army infantry (maybe 27th division) in the Pacific and was on Saipan and New Hebredes (spelling) that I know of. He was hit with schrapnel on Okinawa on Aug. 4 or 5, just a day or so before they dropped the big bomb on Hiroshima. We always kid that him being hit was what made them decide to do it. He survived his injuries and lived to be 76 when he passed away of CHF in 1993. He told me lots of stories about the war but they mostly had a humorous turn to them. Since reading "Operation Iceberg" about Okinawa I know more of what he went through. I guess he wanted to protect his "baby" daughter from those kind of horrors. I wish he was here now so I could tell him how much I respect and admire his courage. He was PFC Lawton L. Brightwell and I think he was inducted in Oklahoma. Thanks for reading my story and letting me share in yours.
