My name is Gillian Nevill and I live in the Village of Fovant Wiltshire UK. Fovant is famous because during WW 1 it was a Garrison for British and Common Wealth Military. Being so far from home probably very bored at times, cut their regiment badges in the Fovant chalk downs.
Sadly some of these brave men lost their lives and are buried in our Church ground.
The Badges remained and where maintained by various Regiments until the Second World War when they where left to over grow because it was an obvious target for the German Luftwaffe.
Fovant was used again in the second World War but on a very small scale.
I am writing to you because 21 years so ago my Husband Children and I on one of our walks came across the remaining structure of the WW2 Ranges. Looking closer on the brick built walls where the names of the men who had stood in that spot manning the targets. Over the years we recorded the names dates and where they where from. There is a mixture of American and British Soldiers. As you are probably aware on the build up to D Day, there was American bases all over the UK. The Soldiers where not Billeted in Fovant but in the surrounding area’s. We have a Fovant History Society who have done lots of research regarding WW1 through grapevines and Village gossip found out about our discovery all those years ago. Residents who had lived through WW2 knew of there existence but it was all overgrown and through time forgot about them.

This has sparked great interest and through my self and Mike Hardman have collated quite a list which I have attached. What I am asking of you is for your help in trying to track these men or there families in hope to put a face to these names. Some of the names are incorrect because the graffiti has worn away.
I would be most grateful of your help and you can email me gill01@nev05.fsnet.co.uk or gnevill809@hotmail.co.uk.
Yours Sincerely
Gill
